History

Origins

Shandora was built 1,100 years ago by the Shandorians, ancestors of the Shandia tribe. The city was located on Jaya Island, in a place called "the skull's right eye".

The name "Shandora" literally means "the skull's right eye", which refers to its location on the skull-shaped island.

Void Century

During the Void Century, Shandora fell to the Twenty Kingdoms, which later became the World Government. The Shandia fought to protect their Poneglyph.

After the Void Century, Shandora crumbled to ruins, but the Shandia continued to guard the city for hundreds of years.

Ascent to the Sky

In 1127, Shandora along with half of Jaya Island was shot up by the Knock Up Stream to Skypiea, where it became known as Upper Yard.

For 400 years, the city was under Skypiean control, while the Shandia fought to reclaim it.

Era of Enel

During Enel's reign, all gold-covered buildings were stripped to build the Ark Maxim. The gold was mined by the enslaved Divine Squad.

After the Upper Yard War, Shandora returned to the hands of the Shandia, who now share it with the Skypieans.

The buildings of Shandora resemble Mayan architecture. The ancient texts discovered in the city are a set of ancient Mayan glyphs, demonstrating deep connections with this civilization.

All buildings in Shandora were covered in gold until Enel took all the gold to build his ark. Today only ruins remain, but they still retain their majestic character.

The word "Shandora" stems from the Sanskrit word for the Moon - "Chandra", which is where the Shandorian race originated from.
